PETRONAS Sprinta Racing and Khairul Idham Pawi complete first day of new Moto2 chapter

New team and engine for Malaysian rider, who finishes first day of testing at Jerez Circuit – Angel Nieto in 20th position.

A new era for the Moto2 World Championship got underway today at the Jerez Circuit – Angel Nieto, as the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing team and its new rider Khairul Idham Pawi got to try the new Triumph engine for the first time. A first shakedown provided the first information about the new package and saw the Malaysian rider finish 20th fastest, feeling satisfied with his new team and bike.

Pawi completed three of the four available sessions today, choosing to skip the first one, which took place in damp conditions after overnight rain, and clocked up a total of 62 laps. As the day progressed the 20-year-old made steady improvements to finish the day with a best lap of 1’43.816, enough for a position in the top twenty on the first outing.

PETRONAS Sprinta Racing and Pawi will aim to continue their assessment of the new bike tomorrow as they look to gather more data and improve his feeling on the bike during two three-hour sessions on track.

Fausto Bencivenni – Crew Chief
“Today was a good start to this test. We were able to run inside the top twenty from the start in all sessions, even though we are getting to grips with a completely different bike to what we are used to. The whole team have enjoyed a good feeling at the start of this new era with Pawi and we hope to continue to improve and get ourselves inside the top fifteen by the end of the test.”

#89 Khairul Idham Pawi
“Today was my first day with the team, I was really excited to get here and to join this great PETRONAS Sprinta Racing family. I felt good at the start of the day but later on suffered some chattering on both the front and the rear. So far, the feeling on the bike with the new engine is really impressive and in general everything went well. We just need to get together with the team, analyse the information we have gathered today and find some things to help us improve tomorrow.”
