SIC Racing Team
Malaysia has been a supporter of MotoGP since 1991 and Sepang International Circuit (“SIC”) has continued that support since 1999 until today. SIC’s support has gone through the evolution of hosting the event to sponsoring and nurturing Malaysian talents and riders in the last five years with much success.
For SIC the next logical step was to establish and own a racing team within the MotoGP Championship.
FIM, Dorna and IRTA have created the dominant force in global motorcycle racing through hard work, passion and professionalism. With a good on-track following and commanding TV audience of hundreds of millions worldwide, it is the perfect tool for a young nation like Malaysia to showcase itself to the world. For SIC, that was a powerful reason to increase their engagement and commitment with the sport and become an integral part of the MotoGP paddock.
SIC firmly believe in the importance of having local heroes and riders as part of the MotoGP race weekend. Since the first program started in 2010 where Zulfahmi Khairuddin competed in the 125cc World Championship, more Malaysian talents have emerged, culminating in four riders within the Moto3 and Moto2 classes for 2015. Together with the popularity of the sports as well as the interest of the Malaysian public in their own home grown-talents, the spectator figures have increased from 100,000 in 2010 to 126,917 in 2014 where six Malaysians where involved.
For SIC establishing their own team in the Moto3 World Championship is a natural progression where they can continue the project to develop Malaysian riders, engineers, mechanics and technical expertise at the world stage. Coupled with their current involvement in the CEV Championship, SIC believe that the value of operating and controlling their own team will benefit the riders as well as the stakeholders in Malaysia. SIC have established a stream of talent development programs that will feed to their CEV involvement and Moto3 World Championship Team.
